Quantity province of Matera, located near the small town of Matera, southern Italy under. This province dates back to the Stone Age and is one of the earliest settlements in Italy, but it is still inhabited.

Sassi of Matera, dates back to 9000 years ago and is believed to be the oldest city in the world inhabited.

City protected by UNESCO is created through caves in the rock of a giant gorge formed by a large river.

At first glance, this place looks like a pile of stones, but there are still people behind them. Until the 20th century people who lived in the ancient city had no running water. They have passed and ongoing problems with the electricity.

While many of the houses are abandoned, the introduction under the protection of UNESCO, the city in 1993, increased the prospects for those left.

Many homes have been turned into inns, restaurants and hotels that are visited by tourists from around the world.

While the mystical appearance of 9000-year old city has become the scene often religious films, such as the 2004 "Passion of Christ".
